AFFORDABLE AIR HEATING & COOLING
How Much Does AC Replacement Cost in Southern Ohio?
If your air conditioner is getting older, breaking down more often or struggling through humid Ohio summers, the first question is usually: what’s a new one going to cost?
The honest answer is that it depends on your home. Two houses on the same street in Chillicothe can need very different systems. This guide explains what actually drives the price of AC replacement in Southern Ohio, what’s included in a quality installation, and how to compare quotes so you’re not surprised.
Typical AC replacement costs in our area
For a typical single-family home in the Chillicothe area, replacing a central air conditioner usually falls in these ranges:
| System type | Typical installed range |
|---|---|
| Central AC with evaporator coil, standard 2–5 ton | $4,000–$6,800 |
Replacing your furnace at the same time? Add the furnace range from our furnace replacement page. Doing both on one job usually costs less than replacing them years apart, and we'll quote the combined price for free.
These are general ranges, not quotes. Your price depends on the factors below, and the only way to get an accurate number is an in-home estimate. Affordable Air’s estimates on new systems are free.
What affects the cost of a new AC unit
1. System size (tonnage)
Air conditioners are sized in tons, which measures cooling capacity. Most homes in our area need somewhere between 2 and 5 tons. A bigger system costs more, but bigger isn’t better: an oversized AC cools the house quickly and shuts off before it removes humidity, leaving your home cold and clammy. An undersized one runs constantly and still can’t keep up on the hottest days.
Proper sizing comes from a load calculation that accounts for your home’s square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure, ceiling heights and ductwork. Be cautious of any quote that sizes your new system just by matching the old one or by square footage alone.
2. Efficiency rating (SEER2)
AC efficiency is measured in SEER2. The higher the number, the less electricity the system uses to produce the same cooling. Higher-efficiency systems cost more upfront and save more on your electric bills each month.
Federal standards set a minimum efficiency for new systems sold in Ohio. Beyond that minimum, the right choice depends on how long you plan to stay in your home, how much you run your AC and your budget. We’ll show you the trade-off honestly rather than pushing the most expensive option.
3. Single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed
- Single-stage systems run at full power or not at all. They’re the most affordable.
- Two-stage systems run at a lower setting most of the time and ramp up on the hottest days. They’re quieter and better at controlling humidity.
- Variable-speed systems adjust in small increments to match exactly what your home needs. They offer the best comfort, efficiency and humidity control, at the highest price.
In humid Southern Ohio summers, the better humidity control of two-stage and variable-speed systems is a real comfort upgrade, not just a spec-sheet number.
4. The refrigerant transition
The HVAC industry is moving away from R-410A refrigerant to newer, lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. New systems installed today use these newer refrigerants. That matters for replacement because an older indoor coil generally isn’t compatible with a new outdoor unit, so the coil is usually replaced along with the condenser. It’s one reason a "just replace the outside unit" quote can be misleading.
5. Matching indoor equipment
Your AC works as a matched system with the indoor coil and the furnace or air handler that moves the air. If your furnace is also near the end of its life, replacing both at once often costs less overall than doing them years apart, and it guarantees the two are designed to work together. If your furnace is relatively new, we’ll match the new AC to it.
6. Ductwork condition
Leaky, crushed or undersized ducts can undercut even a brand-new system. Sometimes ductwork just needs sealing or a few repairs. In other cases, especially in older homes or when moving to a larger system, sections need to be modified or replaced. A good contractor checks your ducts before quoting.
7. Installation details
A quality installation includes a lot more than setting the new unit. Depending on your home, it may include:
- Removing and properly disposing of the old system and its refrigerant
- A new pad for the outdoor unit
- New or flushed refrigerant line set
- Electrical updates, such as a new disconnect or breaker
- A new thermostat
- Condensate drain work
- Permits and inspection where required
- System startup, testing and a walk-through of how to use it
Ask exactly what’s included. Two quotes can look far apart simply because one includes these items and the other doesn’t.
8. Brand and warranty
We install Trane, Day & Night and Goodman equipment, and Mitsubishi Electric ductless systems. Brands differ in features, warranty terms and price. Most manufacturers offer a parts warranty, often extended when the system is registered after installation. Ask how long the warranty runs, what it covers and whether labor is included.
Is it time to replace, or can you repair?
Not every AC problem means you need a new system. Replacement usually makes sense when:
- The system is around 12 to 15 years old or older
- It needs a major repair, such as a compressor or a new coil
- Repairs are becoming frequent
- Your electric bills keep climbing
- Some rooms never get comfortable
- It uses old R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced
Our guide on whether to repair or replace covers the decision in more detail.
Ways to manage the cost
Financing
A new AC is a big purchase, and most homeowners don’t pay for it all at once. Affordable Air offers financing for all credit types, including 0% APR for 72 months, with approved credit through Service Finance Company, LLC. Learn more on our financing page.
Rebates and incentives
There are currently no state or utility HVAC rebate programs in Ohio that we're aware of. Manufacturer promotions come and go, and we'll tell you about any that apply when we give you an estimate.
Maintenance protects your investment
A new system lasts longest when it’s maintained every year. Our Comfort Club includes annual A/C and furnace tune-ups, priority service and 10% off repairs.
How to compare AC replacement quotes
When you get more than one estimate, compare them line by line:
- Was a load calculation done? Or did they size by guesswork?
- What exact equipment is quoted? Model numbers for the outdoor unit, the coil and any furnace or air handler.
- What’s the efficiency rating of the full matched system?
- What’s included in installation? Line set, pad, electrical, thermostat, permits, disposal.
- What are the warranty terms on parts and labor?
- Is the contractor licensed and insured in Ohio?
Already have a quote and want a gut check? Affordable Air offers a free second opinion on any competitor’s quote. We’ll walk through what’s included and tell you honestly whether it looks right for your home.
Frequently asked questions
How long does AC replacement take?
Most residential AC replacements take one day. Jobs that include a new furnace, ductwork changes or electrical upgrades can take longer.
Should I replace my furnace at the same time?
If your furnace is more than about 15 years old, replacing both at once often saves money over doing them separately and ensures the two are matched. If your furnace is newer, it usually makes sense to keep it.
Can I replace just the outdoor unit?
Sometimes, but usually not. Because of the refrigerant transition and matched-system design, the indoor coil typically needs to be replaced along with the condenser for the system to work efficiently and keep its warranty.
How long does a new AC last?
With yearly maintenance, a central air conditioner typically lasts 12 to 15 years or more.
