No heat, or lukewarm air
If the blower runs but the air isn’t warm, the burners may not be lighting or staying lit. Common culprits include a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter or a gas supply problem.

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?
If the blower runs but the air isn’t warm, the burners may not be lighting or staying lit. Common culprits include a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter or a gas supply problem.
A furnace that turns on and off every few minutes wears itself out and never fully heats the house. Overheating, a clogged filter, a dirty flame sensor or a thermostat problem can all cause it.
Banging, squealing, scraping or rattling can mean a failing blower motor, a loose part or delayed ignition. Delayed ignition in particular should be checked right away.
If some rooms are always cold or your heating bills keep climbing, the furnace may be losing efficiency, or there may be an airflow problem in the ductwork.
Gas burner flames should be mostly blue. A lazy yellow flame can signal incomplete combustion and needs a professional inspection.
A furnace that never shuts off may be undersized, struggling with a blocked filter or ductwork, or responding to a faulty thermostat.
If you smell gas, leave the house immediately, then call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don’t flip switches or use your phone inside. If a carbon monoxide detector sounds, get everyone outside and call 911. Every home with a fuel-burning furnace should have working CO detectors on each level.
WHAT WE USUALLY FIND
This small rod confirms the burners are lit. When it’s coated with residue, the furnace lights and then shuts off seconds later. It’s one of the most common winter service calls we make.
Most modern furnaces use an igniter instead of a pilot light. Igniters are fragile and wear out over time, leaving the furnace unable to light.
The inducer motor clears exhaust gases before the burners light, and the pressure switch confirms it’s working. If either fails, the furnace won’t start, as a safety measure.
If the furnace heats but little air reaches the rooms, the blower motor or its capacitor may be failing.
A dirty filter restricts airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut off on its high-limit safety switch.
High-efficiency furnaces produce water. A clogged drain, trap or pump will shut the system down.
Electrical failures in the control board or thermostat can stop the furnace from responding at all.
For propane homes, an empty tank, a frozen regulator or a supply issue can look like a furnace failure. If you’re out of propane, call your propane supplier first.
BEFORE YOU CALL
If the furnace still won’t run, call us. Please don’t remove panels or bypass safety switches.
We don’t guess, and we don’t replace parts until we know what’s wrong. Our technician tests the system, checks safety controls, explains what failed and why, and gives you the price before any repair begins. If your furnace is near the end of its life, we’ll tell you honestly.
WEIGHING YOUR OPTIONS
Most furnace problems are worth repairing, especially on a system under about 15 years old. But a cracked heat exchanger, a failed control board on an older unit, or repairs that keep stacking up can make replacement the better investment. A cracked heat exchanger is also a safety concern, since it can allow carbon monoxide into the home.
Our guide to repair or replace explains the rules of thumb we use. If replacement makes sense, see furnace replacement, or compare options in heat pump vs. furnace.
CLEAR SCOPE. INFORMED DECISIONS.
Furnace repair costs depend on the part that failed, your furnace’s brand and age, and whether it runs on natural gas, propane or electricity. Common repairs like flame sensor cleaning, igniters and filters are usually affordable. Inducer motors, blower motors and control boards cost more. We always quote the price before starting.
