It’s 12 to 15 years old or older
Because heat pumps run year-round, most last 12 to 15 years.
AFFORDABLE AIR HEATING & COOLING
A new heat pump that keeps up in July and January.
Heat pumps work hard in every season, so they typically wear out sooner than a furnace or AC alone. When yours is aging or failing, Affordable Air will help you choose the right replacement, sized properly and set up to rely less on expensive backup heat. We’ve served Chillicothe and Southern Ohio since 2006.

WEIGHING YOUR OPTIONS
Because heat pumps run year-round, most last 12 to 15 years.
If Aux Heat is always on and your electric bills spike every winter, your heat pump may not be keeping up anymore.
These are the repairs that usually tip the math toward replacement on an older system.
Older heat pumps that use R-22 get more expensive to repair with every leak.
Weak heat, weak cooling, clamminess in summer or rooms that never feel right.
Repairs every season are a sign the system is near the end.
THE EQUIPMENT IS ONLY PART OF THE PICTURE
You bring your comfort goals. We bring the technical know-how to evaluate your home and explain the options.
We do a load calculation that accounts for winter heat loss as well as summer cooling, so your new heat pump handles both without leaning on backup heat.
Today’s variable-speed and cold-climate heat pumps keep producing heat at much lower outdoor temperatures than models from 15 years ago. For many Southern Ohio homes, that means far less backup heat and lower winter bills.
Your heat pump works with an indoor coil and air handler or furnace. With the move to newer refrigerants like R-454B and R-32, the indoor equipment is usually replaced too, so the system performs as rated and keeps its warranty.
We’ll check your heat strips or furnace and recommend whether to keep, upgrade or switch to a dual-fuel setup.
SEER2 measures cooling efficiency and HSPF2 measures heating efficiency. We’ll show you what higher ratings save in your home, honestly.
We test your heat pump, backup heat and indoor equipment before recommending anything, and give you the price in writing. If a repair still makes sense, we’ll say so—and if replacement is the better call, we’ll tell you why.
WEIGHING YOUR OPTIONS
A heat pump under about 10 years old is usually worth repairing. On a system 12 years or older facing a compressor replacement, major leak or repeated breakdowns, a new heat pump often costs less over time, especially once you factor in lower electric bills. Our repair or replace guide walks through the decision.
Thinking about a different approach entirely? Some homeowners replace an aging heat pump with a dual-fuel system or compare it with a furnace. See heat pump vs. furnace.
Typical installed prices for ducted heat pump systems in our area:

CLEAR SCOPE. INFORMED DECISIONS.
Cost depends on size, SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings, single-stage vs. variable-speed operation, cold-climate features, whether the air handler or furnace is replaced, backup heat, electrical updates and ductwork condition. Usually not. The indoor coil or air handler typically needs to be replaced too because of the refrigerant transition and matched-system design.
It depends on your fuel options. Many homeowners keep a heat pump and add a gas or propane furnace for a dual-fuel system.
