WEIGHING YOUR OPTIONS
Most central air conditioners last 12 to 15 years. Past that, efficiency drops and major parts start to fail.
A failed compressor, a leaking coil or a repair that costs a large share of a new system’s price usually means replacement is the better investment.
Systems installed before about 2010 often use R-22, which is no longer produced. Every leak gets more expensive to fix.
One repair in ten years is normal. Several in a couple of seasons is a pattern.
An aging AC works harder for the same comfort. Today’s systems use far less electricity for the same cooling.
Rooms that won’t cool, sticky humidity and a system that runs nonstop can mean the old unit was never sized properly to begin with.
THE EQUIPMENT IS ONLY PART OF THE PICTURE
You bring your comfort goals. We bring the technical know-how to evaluate your home and explain the options.
We size your new system with a load calculation that accounts for square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure and ductwork, not by just matching the old unit. Oversized systems leave homes clammy; undersized ones run constantly and never catch up.
Your AC works with an indoor coil and your furnace or air handler. With the industry’s move to new refrigerants like R-454B and R-32, the indoor coil is usually replaced along with the outdoor unit so the system runs efficiently and keeps its warranty.
Higher-SEER2 systems cost more upfront and save more each month. We’ll show you the trade-off honestly based on how long you plan to stay and how much you run your AC.
In the humid Scioto Valley, two-stage and variable-speed systems remove moisture better than single-stage units. For many homes, that’s the biggest comfort upgrade of all.
A new system can’t perform well through leaky or undersized ducts. We check your ductwork and tell you if anything needs attention.
We check your air conditioner, coil and ductwork before recommending anything, and give you the price in writing. If a repair still makes sense, we’ll say so—and if replacement is the better call, we’ll tell you why.
WEIGHING YOUR OPTIONS
Not every AC problem means you need a new system, and we’ll tell you when a repair makes more sense. A useful rule of thumb: multiply the repair cost by the system’s age. If the result is more than $5,000, replacement is usually the better value. Our guide to repair or replace walks through it in detail.
If your furnace is also 15 years old or more, replacing both at once often costs less than doing them years apart and guarantees a matched system. See furnace replacement.
A new central air conditioner with a matching evaporator coil typically runs:
| System | Typical installed price |
|---|---|
| Central AC with evaporator coil, standard 2–5 ton | $4,000–$6,800 |
Typical installed price ranges for Chillicothe-area homes as of October 2026. Your exact price depends on your home, system size and installation needs. Estimates on new systems are free, and financing is available for all credit types (0% APR for 72 months, with approved credit).
CLEAR SCOPE. INFORMED DECISIONS.
The price of a new AC depends on system size, efficiency rating, single-stage vs. two-stage vs. variable-speed, whether the indoor coil or furnace is replaced too, ductwork condition and installation details like the line set, pad, electrical work and permits. Our guide to AC replacement cost breaks it down. Every estimate is free and in writing.
