AFFORDABLE AIR HEATING & COOLING

Repair or Replace? How to Decide on Your HVAC System

Your air conditioner just quit in the middle of a heat wave, or your furnace needs another repair this winter. Now you’re facing the question every homeowner eventually hits: do you fix it, or is it time for a new system?

There’s no single right answer for every home, but there is a straightforward way to think it through. This guide covers the rules of thumb HVAC pros use, the warning signs that point toward replacement, and the situations where a repair is clearly the smarter move.

Start with three questions

1. How old is the system?

Age is the biggest factor. Typical lifespans with regular maintenance:

A repair on a five-year-old system is almost always worth it. The same repair on a system near the end of its expected life deserves a harder look, because more repairs are likely on the way.

2. How much is the repair?

Two rules of thumb help put a repair quote in perspective:

The $5,000 rule. Multiply the age of the system by the cost of the repair. If the result is more than $5,000, replacement is usually the better value. For example, a $600 repair on a 12-year-old AC comes to $7,200, which suggests it’s time to start looking at replacement. A $300 repair on a six-year-old system comes to $1,800, so repair it.

The 50% rule. If a repair costs more than half the price of a new system, replacement usually makes more sense, especially on an older unit.

These are guidelines, not laws. They don’t account for your budget, how long you plan to stay in your home or how the system has been maintained. But they’re a useful gut check.

3. How often has it needed repairs?

One repair in ten years is normal wear. Three repairs in two years is a pattern. When breakdowns start stacking up, you’re often paying repair bills on a system that’s going to need replacing soon anyway.

Signs it’s probably time to replace

Major component failure on an older system

Some repairs are expensive enough that they change the math on their own:

A cracked heat exchanger deserves special mention. It can allow carbon monoxide into your home, so it’s a safety issue, not just a comfort one. On most older furnaces, a cracked heat exchanger means furnace replacement. Every home with gas appliances should have working carbon monoxide detectors.

It uses R-22 refrigerant

If your AC or heat pump was installed before about 2010, it may use R-22 refrigerant. R-22 is no longer produced in the United States, so the remaining supply is limited and expensive. A refrigerant leak on an R-22 system is often the point where AC replacement makes the most sense.

Rising energy bills

As systems age, they lose efficiency. If your bills keep climbing even though your usage hasn’t changed, your system may be working harder to deliver the same comfort. Today’s systems are also substantially more efficient than equipment from 15 years ago, so the monthly savings from a new system can be significant.

Comfort problems that never go away

Rooms that are always too hot or too cold, high humidity in summer, dry air in winter or a system that runs constantly can mean the equipment is undersized, worn out or never matched well to your home. Replacement is a chance to fix the underlying problem with proper sizing and ductwork corrections.

Noise, smells and short-cycling

Grinding, banging, screeching, burning smells and a system that turns on and off every few minutes are all signs of a system under strain. Some of these are repairable. On an older system, they’re often early warning signs of bigger failures ahead.

When repair is the right call

Replacement isn’t always the answer, and a good contractor will tell you when it isn’t. Repair usually makes sense when:

Many of the most common service calls we handle in Chillicothe fall into this category, and they’re quick, reasonably priced fixes.

Don’t forget the other half of the system

If your AC is failing and your furnace is the same age, it’s worth thinking about both. Your AC and furnace work together as a matched system, and replacing them at the same time often costs less than doing them years apart. It also ensures they’re designed to work together for the best efficiency and comfort.

If your furnace is relatively new, it usually makes sense to keep it and match a new AC or heat pump to it. Pairing a new heat pump with an existing gas furnace, called a dual-fuel system, is a popular option in Southern Ohio. See heat pumps vs. furnaces for more.

What does replacement cost?

Every home is different, but our guides on AC replacement cost and heat pump installation cost walk through what drives the price. Affordable Air also offers financing for all credit types, including 0% APR for 72 months, with approved credit. See financing options.

How to make the decision with confidence

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old AC?

Often not, unless the repair is small and inexpensive. At 15 years, an AC is at or past its expected lifespan, likely less efficient than a new system and may use R-22 refrigerant.

Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?

If both are more than about 12 to 15 years old, replacing them together usually saves money and ensures they’re matched. If one is much newer, keep it.

Can regular maintenance delay replacement?

Yes. Yearly tune-ups catch small problems early and keep systems running efficiently. A well-maintained system often lasts years longer than a neglected one. Our Comfort Club includes annual heating and cooling tune-ups.
