When your air conditioner quits on a humid Scioto Valley afternoon, you need someone who’ll find the real problem and tell you plainly what it’ll take to fix it. Affordable Air has repaired air conditioners across Chillicothe and Southern Ohio since 2006, on every major brand, and we explain your options before any work starts.
If the system runs but the air coming out isn’t cool, something in the refrigeration cycle isn’t working. It could be a failed capacitor, a refrigerant leak or a compressor problem, and the sooner it’s checked, the less likely a small problem becomes a big one.
Ice on the lines or indoor coil
Frost on the copper lines or ice around the indoor unit usually means low refrigerant or poor airflow. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, so turn it off and call.
Water around the furnace or air handler
Your AC removes gallons of moisture on a humid day. A clogged condensate drain or cracked pan sends that water onto your floor instead of down the drain.
The outdoor unit hums but won’t start
A humming condenser with a fan that won’t spin often points to a weak capacitor or a failing motor, two of the most common summer repairs we make.
Strange noises or smells
Buzzing, grinding, rattling or a burning smell can mean electrical problems, a failing motor or loose parts. Shut the system off and call before more damage is done.
The house feels cool but clammy
If the temperature drops but the air feels sticky, the system isn’t removing enough humidity. That’s a common problem in the Scioto Valley and usually fixable.
WHAT WE USUALLY FIND
Common causes we find
Failed capacitor
Capacitors give the compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start. Heat waves and power surges wear them out, and they’re one of the most frequent AC repairs in Southern Ohio summers.
Refrigerant leaks
An AC doesn’t use up refrigerant. If it’s low, there’s a leak. We locate and repair leaks rather than just topping off the system, because refrigerant added to a leaking system is gone again in weeks.
Dirty condenser coil
The outdoor coil releases the heat pulled from your home. Grass clippings, cottonwood and dirt can coat it until the system can’t keep up on the hottest days.
Clogged condensate drain
Algae and debris build up in the drain line over time. Many systems have a safety switch that shuts the AC off when the drain backs up, which looks like a dead system but is often a simple fix.
Contactor or electrical failures
Worn contactors, loose wiring and failed relays can keep the outdoor unit from starting even when the thermostat calls for cooling.
Blower motor problems
If little air comes from the vents, the indoor blower motor or its capacitor may be failing.
Compressor problems
The compressor is the heart of the system and the most expensive part to replace. When it fails on an older system, we’ll talk honestly about whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
BEFORE YOU CALL
What you can safely check first
Thermostat: Make sure it’s set to Cool, the setpoint is below room temperature and the batteries aren’t dead.
Air filter: A clogged filter can choke airflow and even freeze the coil. Replace it if you can’t see light through it.
Breakers: Check the panel for a tripped AC or condenser breaker. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
Outdoor unit: Clear away leaves, grass and anything blocking airflow around the condenser.
If none of that helps, or you see ice, water or smell burning, turn the system off and call us. Our guide to AC not cooling goes deeper.
Diagnosis first, then a clear recommendation
We don’t guess, and we don’t replace parts until we know what’s wrong. Our technician tests the system, explains what failed and why, and gives you the price before any repair begins. If the problem is small, we’ll fix it. If your system is near the end of its life, we’ll tell you that too, without pressure.
Most AC problems are worth repairing, especially on a system under about 10 years old. But when a system is 12 to 15 years old, uses old R-22 refrigerant, or needs a major repair like a compressor or coil, replacement often makes more financial sense.
A common rule of thumb: multiply the repair cost by the system’s age. If the result is more than $5,000, start looking at replacement. Our guide to repair or replace walks through the decision, and if replacement is the right call, see AC replacement.
CLEAR SCOPE. INFORMED DECISIONS.
What affects the cost of AC repair
Repair costs depend on what failed, the part needed, your system’s brand and age, and whether refrigerant work is involved. Simple repairs like a capacitor, contactor or drain cleaning are usually affordable. Refrigerant leak repairs, coil replacement and compressor work cost more. We always quote the price before we start.

YOUR HVAC CONTRACTOR. YOUR NEIGHBORS.
Chillicothe has been home from the beginning.
Affordable Air was founded in Chillicothe in 2006 and still works out of our shop at 949 East Main Street. We repair air conditioners across Ross, Pickaway, Pike, Scioto, Jackson, Fayette and Vinton counties, and we know how humid Scioto Valley summers push a system to its limits.
The most common causes are a dirty filter, a failed capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty outdoor coil or a frozen evaporator coil. Check the thermostat and filter first, then call if it’s still not cooling.
Is it safe to keep running my AC if it isn’t cooling?
Usually not. A frozen coil or low refrigerant can damage the compressor, the most expensive part to replace. Turn it off and call.
How long does an AC repair take?
Most common repairs, like capacitors, contactors and drain clearing, are finished during the same visit. Larger repairs that need special-order parts can take longer.
Do you repair all brands?
Yes. We repair every major brand of central air conditioner.
Can I add refrigerant myself?
No. Handling refrigerant requires EPA certification, and adding refrigerant without fixing the leak doesn’t solve the problem.
Do you offer financing for repairs?
Yes. Financing is available for all credit types, including 0% APR for 72 months, with approved credit.
Do you offer same-day service?
Same-day service is often available for residential calls received before 3 PM, Monday–Friday, at no extra charge, depending on availability.
